In the Godfather, was Johnny Fontane based on Frank Sinatra?

That's what I heard, and it is said his career was in a slump until he won the academy award and was back on top . . Oddly enough, just like Johnny Fontane in the Godfather . . Also interesting, Frank Sinatra was good friends with the Reagans, even had spent time as a guest in the White House as a special guest of Nancy Reagan . . . Now that's corruption . .

Frank's career did have a resurgence after he won an Oscar. That is where the basic Johnny Fontane character came from. As far as Reagan, Frank probably was good friends with Ronald Reagan, but he also very overtly supported John Kennedy for President. So, Frank's friendships may not have been just politics based.
