Why do higher clouds produce more rain?

    Not necessarily. The highest clouds are the cirrus clouds, which are made of ice and never produce any rain.

    Now, the thickest clouds (Cumulonimbus) produce lightning, hale and tons of rain but so do stratocumulus clouds (produce rain) and they're pretty low to the ground. The more condensed a cloud is the more rain it produces.
