1 mole of NaN3 weighs 65 g

70 g = 70/65 moles = 1.077 moles

When we're converting from grams to moles of a given chemical, we need two things: a) the mass of the sample that will be converted, and b) the molecular weight of the compound. According to Wikipedia, the molecular weight of NaN3 is 65.0099 g/mol. This means that for every 6.022x10^23 atoms of NaN3 (or 1 mol of NaN3), we have a mass of 65.0099g. Now that we know the information we need, let's calculate the number of moles.

Dimensional analysis tells us that if we divide the mass (g) by the molecular weight (g/mol), we'll achieve moles, as shown: [g]*1/[g/mol] = [g]*[mol/g] = mol

So now let's divide.

70 g NaN3/65.0099g/mol NaN3 = 1.075 mol NaN3
