I would recommend that you stay in Bangkok for 4 days. Then head down to Phuket for 5 days. If you want to spend a little more time in the Kingdom Chiang Mai is good for another 3 days in the mountains.
When in Bangkok I recommend you stay in the Sukhumvit area (between Sukhumvit Soi 8 and Soi 36) close to the Sky Train (no more than 8 minutes walk). In Phuket I suggest you stay in either Karon or Kata which both have beautiful beaches and views of the mountains. If you go up to Chiang Mai you should stay as close to the Night Bizarre as you can.
All your hotels should be booked before you arrive to secure the best hotel at the best rates. For Thailand the best websites to use are booking.com and latestays.com.Source(s): Six years of holidaying in Thailand..and now I live here!

If you are coming long distance, like from Europe or the Americas stay a minimum of 14 days. This way you can get more out of an expensive plane ticket.
When will you be arriving in Thailand? If it is during high season and you want specific hotels I think it is better to reserve those rooms ahead of time. If you arrive late at night at Bangkok have a room available you can tell the taxi driver to go to. Low season, arriving during the day hours, and you do not mind carrying your bags around looking for a place - you can do that too!
Anytime you want hotel suggestions also say how much per night you want to spend on a room. Use a baht figure. Below travel forums can be useful for currency, hotel advice, scams, transportation, etc.
Do not skip Bangkok! Lots of countries have beaches! Don't waste your entire holiday only at a beach area. Chiang Mai is very popular for tourists to visit. In that area you can see some of the real Thailand. Even in Chiang Mai you can get a tan just walking around.
Other tourists ask the same question:
Phuket is the most expensive area to visit in Thailand. Even more expensive than Bangkok!

I went last year, and stayed at Karon Beach. I have to say it was quite possibly the best holiday I have ever had, and I have had some great ones. I stayed 14 days and loved every minute of it.
The food is amazing, the people are truly lovely, and the climate gorgeous.
