Why shouldn’t we believe Emperor Palaiologos?
9/14/06 New York Times: Pope Benedict quoted 14th-century Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos [one of the last Christian rulers before the Fall of Constantinople to the Muslim Ottoman Empire who wrote about such issues as forced conversion, holy war and the relationship between faith and reason] as having said: "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." The Pope’s recitation of that quote set off Muslim protests around the globe. But was the Emperor telling the truth?
While we cannot go back in time to determine whether or not Islam was, in fact, “spread by the sword” as the Emperor claims, we can determine what religion is involved in most civil wars today:
Google search “civil wars in the world” then research each individual civil war and you will find one common combatant-religion: 90% involve Islam, in China, Russia, Bosnia, Cyprus, Macedonia, Israel, Pakistan, Bosnia, India, Indonesia-Ambon & Halmarhera, Côte d’Ivoire, Kashmir, Kosovo, Kurdistan, Kirghizia, Nigeria, Philippines, Somalia, Turkey, Chechnya, Sudan, Yemen, Thailand, Uganda, Mali, Azerbaijan and East Timor.
Doesn’t that fact lend credence to the Emperor’s claim?

We should believe him. What he said is true. The Islamic Quran and ahadith confirm that Islam is political and militaristic first and a religion last. It still is spread by the sword.
