There should be an overlap. We start offering kitten food mixed with a lot of KMR (kitten milk replacer) to form a slurry when the kittens are 3-4 weeks old. The kittens will still nurse for at least another month, or until mom has had enough of them! Between 4 and 8 weeks the kittens will eat more from the bowl and nurse less often. We gradually reduce the amount of KMR until they are eating just the canned food by 12 weeks old.
At 8 weeks you should have the mom cat spayed.

When Momma pushes them away, which will be when they grow teeth.
