Statehood for Maine as a 'free' state.
Statehood for Missouri as a 'slave' state.
Slavery hence forward was to be disallowed in the territories north of Missouri's southern border.

Lincoln wanted to preserve the Union and prevent the break up of the US into more than one nation. the Southern States believed they did not have to put up with Washington meddling in individual states' rights. The South did not call the war the Civil war but called it "The war of Northern Aggression." but in reality when Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation" everything else fell away and it was about freedom, human rights and dignity......Democrats opposed the Republican Lincoln's attempts to abolish slavery..same as the Democrats did in the 60s over Civil Rights
