Is there any kind of fiber-filled food you can feed a cat that won't cause weight gain?

I feed my nine-year-old male (neutered) cat a prescription urinary tract health food because he once had a stone and the vet said to keep him on this. It's good chow and he loves it, but he is always SO hungry! He weighs 10 pounds and that is the perfect weight for him, he's very healthy and quite active, and a very happy cat, except that every time I move he's trying to lead me to his bowl. Is there some kind of fiber or fiber-filled food that a cat likes, that is healthy and has very few calories? Something like what we would eat for keeping weight down, like vegetables, only he won't eat those of course. Some kind of cat food formulated for the purpose, that will keep him feeling full? Thanks.

Ask your vet if your kitty can eat Hill's Prescription Diet W/D. It has high fiber and low calorie/fat, and is usually used in cats that need to lose a little weight, or diabetic cats who need extra fiber. It also has the exact same pH level as Hills Prescriptioin Diet C/D, which is what is prescribed for cats with struvite crystals, which are by far the most common type of crystal. If he has oxylate crystals, it won't be appropriate, but these are rare. C/D is pretty high fat, so they tend to gain weight on it. W/D is almost always an acceptable substitute because of the pH levels. Your vet should carry it just like the other food, or be able to order it for you. Hill's guarantees all their food, so if your kitty hates it or it doesn't work out, you can return it for a full refund.

If, on the other hand, he had oxylate crystals (which are most common for a stone), he probably would have been fed Hill's S/D for awhile to break it up, then Hill's X/D, or the equivalent in another brand, such as Waltham or Purina prescription diets. There aren't many other options for this type of crystal, unfortunately, but you can ask your vet for stats on another brand, to see if it may be higher in fiber or lower calorie than his current diet. Don't switch his diet, especially to a non prescription diet, without asking your vet though! It's very easy for the pH level to be thrown off and the crystals to reoccur, which is not only painful, but can lead to blockage for a male cat, which can be fatal.
