What you described does happen to people in general. Our subconscious mind has to sort things out, and some people won't admit to perceptions like this.
It depends on how often and for how long, I think. Do you use this as a coping mechanism? I can get so into mathematics, science or art that I can lose track of time, and even block worry and pain. Jana has helped me tune back into my love of art, and it's like a wonderland of meditation.
Don't tell yourself that you're stupid, because you aren't. There's a ton of people out there who like to hurt other people to make themselves feel better. Don't give them a head start.
@ Sparrowbird: I think there are people who can't relate to the type of person who needs to take everything in to mentally digest it all. It's alien to them to imagine someone who can take in astrology, physics, mathematics, Christianity, Buddhism, Communism, Atheism all at the same time, and see them all existing in their own special way. Or string theory is a reality, and maybe it is a cycle which has no beginning. It doesn't have to have a beginning because we feel we need one. There doesn't have to be a God because we feel we need one. Some people will take what I say as my "beliefs" instead of seeing that I'm making a comparison.
