PROMPT
A colleague of the great scientist James Watson remarked that Watson was always “lounging around, arguing about problems instead of doing experiments.” He concluded that “There is more than one way of doing good science.” It was Watson’s form of idleness, the scientist went on to say, that allowed him to solve “the greatest of all biological problems: the discovery of the structure of DNA.” It is a point worth remembering in a society overly concerned with efficiency.

ASSIGNMENT
Do people accomplish more when they are allowed to do things in their own way? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.
MY ESSAY
I believe that studying in your own way is is more useful than attempting to learn by someone else's standards. Learning is a very personal thing, which is the reason that certain people enjoy certain subjects, and others do not. If a person feels as though they are being forced to do something they will not enjoy it. However, if they are exploring something of their own volition because it is something that they are interested in, it will be a much more pleasant, and therefore much more effective experience.
Homeschooling is a perfect example of learning on your own terms. My brother and I were both home schooled for our entire school careers, and have benefited greatly from it. My brother has excelled in music and technology even though math and science were not something he took much interest in. I was able to start school a year early, skip a grade, and then take extra time to build up my transcript before applying to universities, as well as start my own business of teaching voice lessons and do many extra curricular activities.
In the public school system there are choices as well, especially at the high school level. Students are allowed to pick which subjects apply most to their interests, and which level best suits their abilities. If the school system were to apply the same schedule for every student, it would be absolutely detrimental to our culture. Choice in public education is the most important way of raising a future full of creative and diverse individuals.
As a home schooled student who will soon be working towards an arts degree, creativity and diversity are some of the most important things in my life. All people are created equal, but definitely not the same. It is impossible to put a one size fits all sticker on education because it most certainly does not.
