Education- 9th grade was when Social Promotion was not applied to students. Children would be passed to the next grade level so that they would feel equal; however, once a student reached 9th grade, they actually had to pass with good grades.
Economy- The Great Depression was coming to a close, as it had been bankrupting families for years.
Politics- Hitler was at it again. The students in Maycomb's second grade class discussed why he was doing what he was doing, and what was wrong about it.
Racism- People were becoming more and more aware that "Negroes" were people, too. People started to see that persecuting blacks just because they were black was wrong and should be stopped.
