. . My friend, Holmes, was fairly annoyed by the abrupt interruption of this intruder, despite the fact that he had called on us now and then, that he looked very worried, and that he was a well-known instructor from the University of St. Luke , near which we were staying for the week.“I am most sorry, but don’t you think the police can…” said Holmes, (3.) his research.“No,” Soames (4.) , “not the police. I certainly don’t prefer them to get involved.”“Well then, I guess that I have no way out. Please, tell me and my companion, Dr. Watson, here what your story was! After I told him what had happened, he suddenly fell ill and said he needed to rest on my chair. I locked the papers up and came here afterwards.

That's a nice one!
"Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth." I would keep that in mind.
(B)absorbed in/by、(C)dedicated to 介詞錯誤，(D) involved In 無法表示出忙碌的感覺。
(D) inpatient，因為後文有his eyes wide with "anxiety"

said Holmes, (3. absorbed with) his research.
“No,” Soames (4. burst out ) , “not the police.” S
Mr. Soames replied in a rather (9. doubtful ) voice, his eyes wide with anxiety.
the cheater had taken the papers to this desk by the window..., so he (17. should have seen) you walking onto campus
should 最好；could 也不算錯。

Here is an example:
They're absorbed with the responsibility of being a team's protector.
