1. In a condensed structural formula, the repeating units (mainly the -CH2- component) are condensed. For example, CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH3 can be written as CH3-(CH2)3-(CH3).2. There are many functional groups among organic compounds. A functional group is a specific arrangement of atoms that gives a characteristic reaction towards specific chemicals. Functional groups include:C-C single bond; C=C double bond; triple bond-C-X halogen group-CH-OH alkanol group-COH alkanal group-COOH alkanoic acid group-CHNH2 amine groupetc3. A substituent is a chain/branch linked to the main carbon skeleton. For example, for CH3-CH2-CH2-CH(CH3)-CH3, the main carbon chain is CH3-CH2-CH2-CH-CH3, while a substituent -CH3 is attached to the second carbon.4. A homologous series is a group of organic compounds with the same functional group. The members of the homologous series have similar reactions with specific chemicals. For example, ethanoic acid, propanoic acid and butanoic acid are all in the homologous series of alkanoic acids and contain the functional group -COOH, and they all react with bases (e.g. NaOH) and undergo neutralization.
