what is done with jane/john doe bodies?

If someone is found dead and they have not been claimed, how long can the morgue keep them in hopes of family recognizing them?

Lets say a girl about 19 was found in the woods somewhere. The family comes to claim her a year later after searching for their missing daughter. Will the state have already buried her or would she be kept refrigerated the whole time so they can recognize her?

It's all hypothetical. I'm reading a book where a body was found but unidentified and I got curious..

It depends on where. The county of Los Angeles keeps them for about three years.

Why didn't the family come to claim her sooner? Why wasn't there a missing persons report filed?

Why wasn't she identified though dental records?
