# How would i simplify this?? Trying to understand this concept..?

x^2 - 10x +16

divided by

x^2 - 4.

I got 10/4x - 4 but I feel like it might be wrong

I got ( X-8 ) / ( X+2 )

the numerator simplifies to (X-2)(X-8)

the denominator simplifies to (X-2)(X+2)

the common multiplier is (X-2) and so it cancels out, leaving us with the above answer.

I can't say for sure but often with problems like that, they mean factor and simplify:

(x - 8)(x - 2)

------------------

(x + 2)(x - 2); the (x - 2)'s cancel so

(x - 8)

--------

(x + 2)
