Why did Aristotle say that tolerance and apathy are the last virtues of a dying society?

Are they?

Alexander (his student) seemed pretty tolerant, especially given the era and all.

What did he mean?

He meant that if the people in a society stop caring about further improving it (apathy) and allow bad things to happen without trying to stop it (tolerance) then the society will reach its downfall.

I can't find an actual place where Aristotle was quoted but we can still discuss it.

With tolerance run awry, you get what is going on in Europe right now. The mass importation of a culture whose values are entirely at odds with theirs. A culture whose complete disdain for theirs is accepted. A culture whose refusal to integrate or adapt is deemed OK. A culture where underachievement and laziness is accepted. A culture who deems it ok to not seek independence and self-sufficiency, but demands complete dependence on others.

With tolerance, follows apathy. People no longer care about their country, their community, or themselves. They don't care about degenerate acts.

He said no such thing. This is false attribution. But putting the origins aside for a moment what does it mean? Should we be intolerant? The Nazis were intolerant. They murdered Jews, Christians, Gypsies, the mentally ill, homosexuals and others. Should we follow their example? Are the teachings of Jesus who preached tolerance evidence of a dying society? No this quote is rubbish.

...We are effectively tolerating the system, those who are angry aren't putting up a real fight to save the future from corporate greed, political corruption, etc. Once they all come under the realization that it can't be fixed, then total apathy and non-resistance will set in. And society will die.

Just take a look at what's happening in Germany, Sweden and France, and you'll see exactly why tolerance is a social and cultural sin, the putrid nature of which destroys any society or nation that embraces it.

As nina said: He meant that if the people in a society stop caring about further improving it (apathy) and allow bad things to happen without trying to stop it (tolerance) then the society will reach its downfall.

Look at our dying society here in the West. Everyone is apathetic or super tolerant or both of these . The times we live is the proof that his words were right

You know this is a false quote by Aristotle.

The "tolerance is the last virtue of a depraved society" version seems to be attributed to the modern evangelical minister D James Kennedy.

I would guess he would identify those being the last things prior to the killing of each other in that society. When they are gone, the heads will roll and blood will fill the streets.

the recognition of tolerence, as in, we should be tolerent without realising it, to recognise tolerence means that there is an absence of it.
