Why are violent crime rates so low in Japan?

Is Japan's low crime rate simply the product of an affluent, homogenous society, or is there more to it than that?

Guns are banned. Every country where guns are banned has a very low rate of violent crime.

Switzerland has a lot of guns and the crime is exceedingly so low they don't keep track of it. I call bullshit.

Japan is island nation and they have very strict control of what comes in and what goes out, it's been this way for centuries. Guns are a western weapon, they don't really use them. It is a conformist society, this is one of the major reasons why the crime rate is so low.

The laws are very strict, drug offenses can be death sentences there. In Japan the military and the police are the only ones allowed to possess guns, in some cases hunters are as well but they are strictly monitored and they have to go through a series of safety courses and pass a test.

Tokyo is the world's safest big city, with an average of 40 muggings a year, whereas New York City has 11,000 muggings on average. Japan has a high suicide rate but it's not because of guns, it's because of "shinju" suicidal parents often kill their children one per day in "oyako-shinju" (involving one parent and at least one child) suicide.

The Miranda rule in the US, which limits coercion and interrogation techniques does not apply in Japan, authorities may detain a suspect indefinitely until they confess. The confession rate in Japan is 95%, mostly to avoid shame. The police watch EVERYTHING, they carry the guns but barely use them, they use their martial arts skills or police sticks. The Tokyo police maybe fire their guns six times in a given year.

Those claiming Japan is a racially pure society... Uhhh... not according to the Japanese. They don't even consider most Japanese, truly, racially Japanese. For example, look up the treatment of Okinawans during WWII.

Or, for another example, Koreans are, ethnically, the progenitors of the Japanese people. You will not find a more oppressed group in the industrialized world, though, than Japanese born Koreans.

Crime rates are as much perceptual as anything else. Since the rather... uhhh... violent end to WWII the Japanese don't see themselves as a violent people (though they still do have a violent mindset towards many things). They're a people that are fanatic, even fetishistic about violence; one just need look at their video games, or films (J-horror, body horror, Yakuza films, Samurai films, etc.) to understand that.

But they don't carry out those desires in near the rates Americans do. Mainly because the access isn't there.

That doesn't mean it's a perfect society, far from it. Murder rates could actually be much higher, but they tend to count the all too common family suicide as individual suicides, even when there is definitive evidence that a parent(s) killed their child(ren) against their will.

I don't believe affluent is the main reason. Japanese are honorable people, and follow a strict regimen of doing unto others, as you want others to do unto you.

The Japanese culture is built of respect for other people.

Some cultures in the United States are built on hate!

They function more socially. they show less personal assertiveness (during the tsunami many tried to outwalk the tsunami instead of running for their lives)

A vastly different culture from the West.

People will say its because of a lack of guns but they ignore a plethora of real reasons.
