How quickly will peat moss break down?

I have about 5 or 6 cu. ft. of peat moss left over from a gardening project a couple years ago still in original packaging. I would like to dispose of it by sprinkling it loosely in the wooded area behind my home. Would this cause any biological damage? The area I'm talking about is all natural, undisturbed growth.

Diana, peatmoss is so loomy and sprinkled over an area gently should poise no threat or harm to natural areas at all. If you were dumping it all in one place then it would be a different story but it will be so subtle that it will be like kicking a little dirt into that area, harmless. That is so considerate of you!!!
