What is SPE (Synergistic Processing Element)?

I heard the PS3 CPU has 1 core and 8 SPEs (making it function like 8 cores). So what are these SPEs? What do they do? Are they similar to "threads" on Intel Processors?

They're similar to the coprocessors of the old 486 DX processors. They are NOT similar to threads. Threads are a programmatic construction that can be supported in hardware - but doesn't have to be supported to be used. Hyperthreading refers to rapid context switching, and is a pure hardware thing.
