General Lee officially surrendered at the courthouse after being trapped by Union forces near Appomattox, Virginia.
Our Civil War to force Southern Protestant Scots-Irish descent farmers -- who had seceded from the Union after English descent merchants in the North forced outrageous tariffs on their foreign cotton and tobacco trade -- back into the Union. Slavery was long (since colonial days) a hot issue but contrary to lies from everywhere wasn't the one initiating secession. Slavery was the propaganda siren call to rally the North for war.
We might never have had that war if the mostly Catholic Irish starving from potato blight hadn't flooded into the Northeast destroying the economy there with hordes of overpopulating excess labor undercutting wages like Asians and Latinos are doing today. They were perfect cannon fodder for forcing the Protestant Scot-Irish to conform to (ethnic) English rule here, just as those two Irish cultures were used against each other by the English back in Great Britain.
So Appomatox is really just a symbol of the multi-facetted (ethnic, cultural, economic, political, etc.) conflicts our Civil War and all wars, civil and otherwise, are around the world.
Remember though, most of all, wars are always basically over the land and resources needed by expanding hordes of people. Those hordes of my Irish relatives were the greatest hordes -- until today's Latinos -- among the ones who flooded in from overpopulated Europe (before good birth control hit them a half century ago). Mostly Irish swept away the Mongol people here for 15,000 years.
The Irish, later along with Polish, Italian, and other overpopulating hordes forced economic depressions here and Europe. A couple of those culminated in conquests for land and resources we now call World Wars I and II.
PS: The cultural characters of the ethnic groups noted did influence their positions in the process but historical coincidences particularly back in Great Britain drove the general sequence of events for both our revolution and our Civil War.
PPS: If your teacher is a neo-Marxist bigot indoctrinated in universities (see my "Source") he/she won't like this. Just tell them it was all about slavery and the armed conflict ended at Appomatox. He/she will be happy with that.
For decades I studied philosophies, cultures, and social institutions. I began that because of confusion resulting from my military experience under the shadow of neo-Marxist anti-military and anti-capitalism indoctrination in the universities.
I continue a forty year quest wading through the huge pile of stinking crap a wide variety of bigots piled on top of truth hiding it from nearly everyone's view. The pile was made by blaming people they don't like while excusing people they do like regardless of where the fault really lies.
