Oh yes, I remember. I was in about 9th grade. For some reason that I'll never fathom, my Mom brought home a brand new pair of black, basic pumps with 2" or so heels.. Shoes to wear to church, with my Salvation Army uniform. I had assumed we'd get me some black flats, so I was very surprised. They were very comfy, and I loved them. wore them out. I wore heels to work for years. It was expected, tho the bosses would not have frowned if I'd choosen dressy flats, instead. I did notice that the heavier, older ladies generally wore black "walking shoes" and oxfords. Blech! I didn't give up my heels when I got to be their age. Not really high, but the basic 2" pumps. In fact, a lot like my very first pair. I am retired now. Have several pairs of dressy flats. Don't wear the heels because I have an inner ear chronic thing, have sudden dizzy spells every now and then. And often a disc out, on my back.
