I don't know if this applies to your question or not, but consider recent developments in the following:

    1 Quantum computer evolution:

See: Quantum computer built inside a diamond

Quantum computers are an entirely different breed of animal compared to today's digital based machines. As I understand it, problem solving is based upon quantum effects like "sum of all histories, superposition, and entanglement. This type of computer is super-powerful and equally super-fast. One day in the not so distant future, digital computers, least in part, will be all but obsolete.

    2. Synthetic Biology (engineering life)

(".... ... synthetic life ... main idea is not to use a hosting form of life, but rather to take bits of DNA and make a completely new form of life out of them. Basically we go from customizing a program (type of source code) in genetic engineering to writing a completely new source code from scratch in synthetic life. ...")

It is a new way of looking at the mechanism of DNA replication and life processes itself. There will be computer codes one day that will crank out the synthetic DNA (made up from standard lab chemicals) for entirely new and unique life forms having no parents or previous evolutionary history.

The wheel and axle technology has worked quite well in the past, and will continue to work in the future. I would stick with the proven technology.
