Which African countries have a strong football tradition?

I have to write an essay on the history of sport in an African country, I decided to go with football but I don't know which countries in Africa have a big football culture or background.

Help? Sub-Saharan nations preferably.

I don't think they had a long history with Football but when players from African nations did well overseas the majority of the population started taking notice.

Players like Samuel Eto and Didier Drogba are the most prominant.

You might want to write about Zambia winning the African cup of nations after 19years after there was a plane disaster which killed most of the players in the same country (Gabon).

Have a look at piers edwards blog http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/piersedwards/piers_edwa...

You'll probably be able to e-mail him or put something in the comments of one of the latest articles and someone might tell you more

Also you might want to look up some articles by Jonathan Wilson the man is called a the floating brain in a jar when it comes to football he has some stuff on african football in his articles and he is well versed in history so you might find something in there http://www.guardian.co.uk/profile/jonathanwilson

If you're feeling brave you could ring up the World Football Phone on up all night on 5 live

Although usually it's about brazil, europe or america the presenter has nigerian roots so he could give you some answers.

South Africa have strong football tradition. That's where FIFA World Cup 2012 was held. They got a nice stadium!

I would say ivory coast, they have the best ranked team in Africa so they must care about it somewhat.
