Why is the state of New Mexico SOOO anti-gay?

SO I'm not the only one who lives in New Mexico? Probably because this is a nobody state and people come here to get away from everybody.

Religion is very prominent there, I'm not saying that every religious person so happens to be homophobic. It only takes one person to think it's wrong then that'll spread to a bunch of others.

Then again New Mexico isn't so kind to immigrants either, especially those of the Hispanic/Latino descent. I mean California isn't too far away just saying.
