What are you trying to achieve with an "external SSD" exactly?

They are best used as a replacement for a traditional internal SATA system [boot] drive. To speed up the loading of the operating system and for speeding up the launch of software.

If you want an external SSD you really need to have the newer USB 3 ports on your PC to take advantage of the increased speeds.

OCZ make a decent external USB 3 SSD called the "Enyo". it comes in capacities of 64GB or 128GB. I believe they are stocked [at least they are in the UK] by Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=azs_osd_ieauk?ie=UTF...

If you are looking for a fast external drive [and you have USB 3] then I would recommend one from the Western Digital MYBook range. You will be able to get a 2TB WD MyBook for a lot less than a 128GB external SSD and SSD's are only really worth installing and paying out for as internal boot drives.

I have to agree with Fola. For an external drive, seems foolish at this point to go with an SSD. External drives are generally used for long term storage or overflow storage.

If you truly need an SSD for an external drive, look at existing hard drive enclosures and pick up any reliable SSD to mount inside it.

    External SSDs are overpriced.

Order a 2.5" drive enclosure like this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/SuperSlimHD-Aluminum-Drive...

Then buy the drive elsewhere: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-CT128M4SSD2-128GB-...

The drive above is the one i have.
