How much is my old AT&T stock worth?

I found 6 old common shares of stock out in an old barn. They aren't super old as they are dated at Feb 29, 1988. It belonged to my grandfather who worked for AT&T who installed telephone poles, so I dont know if it's some kind of employe thing. Thats all I really know. Can anyone give me any kind of info about this? How much is it worth? Is it even worth anything?

these guys don't know how to evaluate an old stock

look at this Yahoo historical price listing

    http://ca.finance.yahoo.com/q/hp?s=T&a=01&b=21&c=1...

You can see the stock was bought at $37.50 approximately at the close of Feb 29/1988 so these share cost your grandfather 6 x $37.50 = $225.00

The adjusted values are made because of all the dividends and splits of the stock since that time

so you can back track and count up the dividends on this website and see when the splits occurred but an easier way is to go to the AT&T website in Investor relations to get a summary of dividend history and splits

    http://www.att.com/gen/investor-relations?pid=1875...

First look at the stock splits

the ones that apply to your situation are

    1998 March 19 — 2-for-1 common stock split

    1993 May 25 — 2-for-1 common stock split

so as a result of these stock splits....you don't have 6 shares....these have morphed into 24 shares of stock...worth now at a current price of $30.87/share = $740.88

Now we look at accumulated dividends

    http://www.att.com/gen/investor-relations?pid=5675

Here is where the real money is. Here is a summary of dividends collected

    Date range...............shares...dividend periods...dividend/share......total

    03-01-88 - 02-01-89...... 6................. 4................ $0.62.......... $ 14.88

    05-01-98 - 02-01-99...... 24............... 4................ $0.23375..... $ 22.44

    05-01-99 - 02-01-00...... 24............... 4................ $0.24375..... $ 23.40

    05-01-00 - 02-01-01...... 24............... 4................ $0.25375..... $ 24.36

    05-01-01 - 02-01-02...... 24............... 4................ $0.25625..... $ 24.60

    08-01-03 - 08-01-03...... 24............... 1................ $0.28250..... $ 06.78

    11-01-03 - 11-01-03...... 24............... 1................ $0.05000..... $ 02.40

    11-01-03 - 11-01-03...... 24............... 1................ $0.28250..... $ 06.78

    02-01-04 - 11-01-04...... 24............... 4................ $0.31250..... $ 30.00

    02-01-05 - 11-01-05...... 24............... 4................ $0.32250..... $ 30.96

    02-01-06 - 11-01-06...... 24............... 4................ $0.33250..... $ 31.92

    02-01-07 - 11-01-07...... 24............... 4................ $0.35500..... $ 34.08

    02-01-08 - 11-01-08...... 24............... 4................ $0.40000..... $ 38.40

    02-01-09 - 11-01-09...... 24............... 4................ $0.41000..... $ 39.36

    02-01-10 - 11-01-10...... 24............... 4................ $0.42000..... $ 40.32

    02-01-11 - 11-01-11...... 24............... 4................ $0.43000..... $ 41.28

    02-01-12 - 02-01-11...... 24............... 1................ $0.44000..... $ 10.56

Grand total dividends: $624.56 (cannot vouch for the accuracy of my adding :)

    current value of 24 shares @$30.87/share = $740.88

So you are perhaps looking at a value of about $1365.00 rounded

This is certainly worth looking into...as it is a tidy sum.

I would contact Investor relations at AT&T...explain what you have...serial numbers etc of the shares...I am assuming these ar normal common shares and nothing special.

Do you have any information as to how much the stock was worth at 1988? I tried to look it up but i couldnt find it. It's at aboout $31 per stock right now, so depending at what it was during 1988.. i believe it won't be much. 6 shares? If you're lucky about 100 bucks or so.. i'm just estimating. It all depends on what the stock was worth at the time !

EDIT: ok i found it. It was worth about $10 in 1988. So the stock increase $20 to date. So 20 times 6 is $120. It should be around there !

    Hope this helps :)

You can check the exact amount the stock was priced at on Feb 29th 1988 on google charts. Just pull the chart up and hit the lil link inside the chart at the top that says "ALL". That shows every closing price of the stock since the day it's been in the stock exchange. Move your mouse over the chart to the date you want and it'll show it.

    http://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE%3AT

On Feb 26th 1988 it was worth $9.29 cents and the price is $30 now.

So 6 shares was worth $55.74 back then and 6 shares now is worth $180.

    So it's worth about $125

ADDED: Yea didnt notice but like the dude below said it's a dividend stock, so theres a dividend payout on each share for every year since 1988. The divivdend started at 15 cent per share in '88 and moved up steady to where it's at now.... 40 cents per share. So you figure add another $200 - $300 dollars to that with dividend payout that comes with it.

Penny stocks are prone to violent fluctuation (volatility), many people believe that they'll luck out with a stock that will jump from $0.08 to $8 in two weeks. And it's happened. Learn here https://tr.im/REuU3

Scour enough investing message boards and you're sure to find success stories from investors who made a mint while "playing the pennies."

Companies that can successfully make the jump from penny stock to power stock are rare, but when you find them they pay out in spades. Numbers vary quite a bit in the penny stock world, but investors have raked in gains over 1,000% in a couple weeks' time. The real trick is finding the right stock.

My recollection might disappoint you. In 2002, AT&T sold it's TV division to CMCSA, after that, T worth about $1.60. Later on, the MaBell was taken over by the baby bell, the Bell South but keeping it's name T. Your AT&T today, other than the dividend collected over the years, the stock value probably worth nothing.

For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/avhtc

You will likely need to go through a very labor intensive search with a broker. Your property may even be in unclaimed property. My short answer is to contact investor relations for the current ATT to see if they can get you in touch with the registered agent for the old ATT.

You couldn't make a direct comparision because that was the "old" AT&T before it was split up into the "Baby Bells" in the 1980s.

at&t paid dividends that whole time also. For the stock just go to finance.yahoo.com and put in symbol T ....
