(3 x 5⁴) + (0 x 5³) + (4 x 5²) + (1 x 5) + (2 x 5^0)

=> (3 x 625) + (0) + (4 x 25) + (5) + 2

=> 1875 + 0 + 100 + 5 + 2

i.e. 1982

79 cannot be in base 5!!

Base Ten place values: 10^3, 10^2, 10^1, 10^0

translates to..................1000's, 100's, 10's, one's Any number to the 0 power is 1

.........................................3, 502 translate as 3*10^3 + 5*10^2 + 0 *10^1 + 2* 10^0

ALL bases follow the same concept.

Here is base 5:

5^4, 5^3, 5^2, 5^1, 5^0

30412= 3*5^4 + 0*5^3 + 4*5^2 + 1* 5^1 + 2*5^0

..........=3*625 + 0*125 + 4*25 + 1*5 + 2*1

..........=1875 + 0 +100 + 5 +2

..........= 1982

Now you try 79

Hope this helped.

30412 is in base 5

= 2*5^0 + 1*5^1 + 4*5^2 + 0*5^3 + 3*5^4

= 2 + 5 + 100 + 3*625

= 1982

79 must be base 10 ( it can't be base 5)

79 = 3*25 + 4

= 304 to base 5.
