Why is the grey squirrel doing this?

There are peanuts on the ground and on the bird table. The squirrel is ignoring these and is making valiant attempts to get the same peanuts in an adjoining squirrel proof feeder.

Why?

The forbidden peanuts must be better than easily obtained ones, Squirrels must think a bit like us.

Are the peanuts all from the same bag? Some squirrels shun raw peanuts, and prefer roasted ones. Different smell. Also if there are cats or dogs in the vicinity, squirrels will stay off the ground, at least the older ones will.

Is the squirrel proof feeder near trees? He may feel more protected eating there than in the open.
