Isn't Atheism a religion also?

I hear a lot of atheists complaining about religions and how much problems they have caused in the world but think isn't atheism a religion also. Its just one without the belief in god and no book or rules to live by, but still an idea or belief that they all share together. I also cant stand them complaining about "religious people" when i would consider the ones constantly preaching their is no god and there is no proof of god as "religious" as the person also reaching that there is a god.

I would like to hear some opinions of whether you agree or not. Thanks

Update:

    "religion definition

a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe"

Atheism does not propose a cause, nature or purpose of the universe. Atheism is simply a lack of belief in gods. Thus, according to your own definition, atheism is not a religion.

"Its just one without the belief in god and no book or rules to live by, but still an idea or belief that they all share together." Belief and without belief are not the same thing. There is nothing uniting atheists. There is no common idea or belief among all atheists. Try again.

"I also cant stand them complaining about "religious people" when i would consider the ones constantly preaching their is no god and there is no proof of god as "religious" as the person also reaching that there is a god." Very few atheists say "there is no god." However, it is an undeniable fact that there is no proof of any god. That is, unless you are the first person to actually have said proof. If you have it, present it!

    No, it isn't.

    >religion definition

    >a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe

That definition is flawed and does not properly capture what people actually mean when they say 'religion'.

However, even if that were not the case, even if we accept that definition, atheism still wouldn't be a religion. The issue being that atheism does not specifically describe anything about the cause, nature or purpose of the Universe. It merely says there are no real deities. That's all.

No. But this isn't a matter of opinion, it's a dictionary thing. What words mean when they are used.

Atheist and theist are opposites. One without, and one with. Is a theist part of a religion? ...no, not necessarily, and certainly not any one religion. It just means "with theism". Not even one type of religion - except the theistic type of religion. Then there is the opposite atheism. There are atheistic religion, like there are theistic religions. But atheism is not a religion, just like theism is not a religion.

It's a way to describe beliefs about religious claims. It's not a belief system, it's only part of how a belief system can be described. Since not all theists are necessarily part of a religion, neither is any atheist. Most atheists are non-religious, but that doesn't mean they are anti-religious. It doesn't even mean anti-theist (against), it just means "without".

P.S. - It's not capitalized as a proper noun. atheism, theism, religious, non-religious, etc.

Nope. Not unless not believing the number 13 is unlucky is now a "superstition".

"Belief" and "religion" are not synonyms, by the way. AND there are atheists who are religious (some Buddhists, some Unitarian Universalists..) and there are theists who have no religion. I do wish people would get their terminology correct.

EDIT: to your additional details... by your definition of religion, atheism is most definitely NOT a religion. The ONLY thing atheism is is having no belief in any deities. That does not address the "cause, nature, and purpose of the universe".

Do you BELIEVE the Earth goes around the sun? Does your belief make that a religion? Do you BELIEVE 2+2=4? Does your belief make that a religion? Do you BELIEVE E=MC squared? Does your belief make that a religion? Do you BELIEVE H2O is water? Does your belief make that a religion? It takes more than a belief to make a religion. Where is the Atheist theology? How can no theology be a theology? Where is the Atheist supernatural? How can no supernatural be a supernatural? Where are the Atheist rituals? How can no rituals be rituals? There are many things that make theism into a religion but are missing from Atheism.

Atheism simply means not believeing in gods, it is single tenent or belief, not a religion. As the definition you posted said "religion is a set of beliefs.." Non belief in god does not concern the cause, nature or purpose of the universe.

Some religions include a belief in gods in their set of beliefs, some don't. But the simple non belief in gods does not constitute a religion.

No. A religion is a faith-based belief system regarding the supernatural.

Atheism is a lack of belief in gods. It is not faith-based, and it isn't a belief system.

"I would like to hear some opinions of whether you agree or not."

It isn't matter of opinion. It is an objective truth. Atheism is not a religion. If you think it is, you don't "have a differing opinion", you're simply wrong.

Atheism has no set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, or purpose of the universe. It is just a lack of belief in a god. That's it.

Who reported Atheism is a faith? Atheism isn't a faith. Come properly...''Atheists are the lads and women who do no longer believe some thing with out suitable evidence''. Who worried about them or their concern or their criteria? First, there's no longer any atheists the following in india. Atheists are extra in christianity, and contained in the western international places. There are as many motives for being an atheist as there are atheists: the line to atheism has a tendency to be personal and individual, depending upon the centred circumstances of a personality’s life, studies, and attitudes. besides the undeniable fact that, that's achievable to describe some generic similarities that are oftentimes shaped between truly very few atheists, highly atheists in the West. that's a astounding question; regrettably, it isn’t really consumer-friendly to respond to. Many atheists locate their approach to disbelief via way of technological awareness. Over the centuries technological awareness has come to recent motives of aspects of our word that were once the unusual portion of religion. thinking the truth that medical motives were extra useful than non secular or theistic motives, the potential of religion to call for allegiance has weakened. subsequently, some persons have come to absolutely reject now no longer best faith, yet as well concept contained in the life of a god. For them, gods are ineffective as an reason for any function of the universe and provide no longer some thing properly worth investigating. have you ever ever heard of 'smart atheists'? that's a classification utilized via some non secular theists to describe a majority of those theists who technically sense in a god, besides the undeniable fact that who behave immorally. the concept is that moral habit follows immediately from authentic theism, hence immoral habit is a very last results of now no longer truly believing. Theists who behave immorally have were given to really be atheists, regardless of what they think about.

How is not believing in something the equivalent of believing in a God or gods? Atheism is definitely NOT a religion. By definition an atheist doesn't believe in any God or gods.
