... where e.g. the guitar player is featured, but it is not a solo, since the other instruments are playing but nobody is singing? They mights switch to drums, but the other instruments play too. Ya know what I mean? Thanks.

That IS a solo.

A solo still has the other instruments playing, however they are usually quieter and more repetitive. The person that plays a tad bit louder than the band with more phrasing is usually the person soloing.
