whats the difference between record companies and record labels?

    Record companies are huge umbrella organizations that can own many smaller record labels. For example Universal Music Group, a huge record company, owns Def Jam, Decca, Island, Geffen, and lots of others, which are all labels, or sub-companies which help manage artists based on their genre.

    A record labels are in the music industry, a record label is a brand and a trademark associated with the marketing of music recordings and music videos. I am not sure what a record company are different.
