Panama was a province of Colombia, which had been trying to gain its independence for decades. When the U.S. decided to build the canal there, they tried to buy Panama from Colombia. The Colombians refused to sell. So the U.S. armed the Panamanian rebels to the point that they were able to simply win their independence and drive the Colombians out (which you can imagine how the Colombians appreciated). In return, the new government of Panama sold the U.S. the Canal Zone.

The Canal Zone remained a U.S. territory until 1979, then was gradually turned over to full Panamanian sovereignty over the next 20 years. Panama has had full control of the canal since 1999.

Originally Panama was part of the nation of Columbia. The United States basically forced Columbia to give Panama its freedom. and took control of the canal. PAnama gained control inthe 1980s as I remember.
