Can I use a verizon droid on a verizon prepaid plan?

I have a first generation Droid phone that was used as a contract phone. I can't afford to pay it and would like to use it with the prepaid $50 unlimited can I use it? Please tell me if I can thanks.

I don't need the data plan.

I have a Droid X2 and am on the "Pay as you Go" plan with Verizon paying a little over $100 a month and I asked Verizon the same question. Apparently there is a difference in the data on the $50 umlimited plan that makes these phone incompatible with that plan. I'm no techno geek but the lady told me that the data was in a different format.
