why should people discriminate?

in health and social we are learning about discrimination and i wanna know why people should discriminate? as my hwk.. bcuz my teacher makes us do the homwwork about the subject before we even do it...SO HELPPP PLZZ

When you first meet someone, there's this basic human instinct to decide "friend or foe?" In other words, there's a part of us that decides whether a new person is safe to be around. Also, we judge whether they are attractive, intelligent, friendly, etc. We tend to like people who are like us or like our family. We don't like people who look very different or hostile or armed, until we get to know them.
