How do I format a date in excel as a nested If Function?

Example: Cell E37 is linked to cell L12. L12 will either be a date or will be 0. I would like Cell E37 to either say NC for the 0 or return the date that is in cell L12.

I have done multiple variations of =IF(L12=0,"NC"),IF(DATE(year,month,day),"NC") and it seems whatever variation I do the only one that kinda works is the first portion of the formula by itself.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Format E37 as a Date and use this

    =IF(L12=0,"NC",L12)

    in E37
