We put yogurt almost in anything ..Don't be surprised when your Turkish friend eat eggplant , rice ,spaghetti , fried potato with yogurt on them.
People say our food is spicy but this is not very true ..We don't cook food in spice .we don't have spicy marinades, thick sauces Spices are optional and served on table ..We use more herbs than spices , dill , coriander ,thyme , fresh mint , basil etc with side vegetables grilled together with meat like onions green peppers eggplant etc.Garlic , onion , butter ,tail fat is prominent in Turkish grills .Kebap meat is chopped with knife , not in machine .
Turkish food is not only kebabs , and we don't eat kebabs at home.It is a type of food we eat outside or as street food made by professional cooks.
Turkish home cooking is based on dough ( dumplings , bureks, home made noodles -eriste ) sulu yemek ( pot meal made of vegetables and meat served in bowl , more like asian food , soup-like ) vegetables cooked in olive oil cold meals or side dish , bulgur and rice meals , soups , food made of innards ( stomach , sheep head , tripe , leg etc), , hundreds of different type of meatballs are typical Turkish food .
