Good free and/or open source backup software for windows?

I dont like the built in backup program for windows 7. Its slow (1.5 TB has taken 4 days now and its only at 75%). It uses the BKP format or whatever it is. Is there any programs out there that archive to a universal archive format like rar? or would that be impractical for that big of a backup. I add/remove files to the drive on a regular basis (20 GB max usually for most changes). thanks!

Try making a batch file just using Robocopy.

Robocopy employs multi-threading so it's very fast. I use it at work to backup tens of thousands files from servers.

The first you run it, it will take a while (maybe a couple of hours) but once done, because it only copies changed or new files it is tremendously fast.

The logging is great. If files disappear or are moved from the source the program marks them as EXTRA in the log file. Another simple batch file will find these if you need them.

The last two URLs show how to compress files automatically using the free 7-Zip command line and then backing that up using Robocopy.

The second from last URL also shows how to do full and incremental backsups using Robocopy.

It's not the best thing since sliced bread but for what I use it for I can't think of anything faster or better. One of the best parts is no weird bkp or whatever files to worry about. Just plain zip (if you use the 7-Zip option) and ordinary files. The only thing Robocopy can't do itself is make the zip files.

If you prefer you can use WinRAR or WinZip - both have command line interfaces which can be run from a batch file.

Your requirement is archive your data and not backup. Archive simply stores the data to the destination location. The backup application adds some intelligence to process the data.

When you change the data, in archive system, the old file will be deleted and updated with the latest content. You cannot recover the previous version of that file.

Using backup system, the modified blocks alone will be stored in the destination location. You can recover the previous version as well as deleted files.

Updating a 1.5TB of file for a few changes will take large time and affect other processes in the system.

If you want to keep track of the changes in your data, I suggest you a backup application.
