What should I do if a teacher says something that is offensive to me?

Update:

An example would be a teacher talking about hunting, fishing or eating meat. I think it is cruel to kill animals.

Same with religion, can a teacher talk about church or mention God in school (excluding learning about the Crusades, Greek myths, etc...) ? I think religion is terrible. It wastes time and is just blasphemous in general. It has caused so much unneeded trouble in the world.

Do not say something offensive back. Guess who is going to lose that battle. You should talk to the teacher privately after or before class and express your concerns in a kind and adult manner. If that doesn't go well or the offense is severe, you should speak to administration aka counselor, principal, vice principal. Chances are the teacher did not intend to hurt your feelings, but not everyone is a good person. Good luck!

First of all, don't expect to go through your life hearing only what you want to hear. And why would you be offended by a teacher talking about normal things like eating animals or religion? Engage in conversation. Don't sit and fold your arms feeling righteous. Test your own opinions. The classroom is an excellent place for that.

By the way, your convictions won't be strong unless they are tested. For example, you think it's wrong for us to kill animals for food, but are you equally offended that animals kill each other for food? It is quite a large part of nature, what nature dictates. When a lion crushes the throat of a zebra, is that cruel? What is the lion supposed to do instead? Did evolution make a mistake? And if you think it's because animals don't know any better, what makes us better than they are?

Regarding religion, I will agree that all religions have committed crimes and violence in the name of their god. But you don't have to look any further back than the last century to know that atheism hasn't fared any better. You could ask the million upon millions of people slaughtered by the former Soviet Union, Communist China, Cambodia, and Cuba but........they're all dead. Seems it doesn't matter if people have religion or not. There is something seriously wrong with the human heart. Yes?

Food for thought. Don't focus so much on your feelings. Instead, focus on truth and put your energy into searching for it. Focus on the issue, not the person. In your search for it, truth just might find you. :)

If you read the United States Constitution, everybody has freedom of speech. Every individual in the world has the right to speak his or her opinion. You can love them, you can hate them, and you can simply not care either way. Nothing says you have to agree with them, however it would be a different story if your teacher forced you to agree with his or her opinion which can possibly result to a failing grade. If that's the case, then there's a problem. Otherwise, it wouldn't be right to discontinue their freedom of speech because you personally disagree with it.
