Engineering is about problem solving. Over the years I have designed electrical substations, built electrical substations, repaired substations, designed relay protection systems, carried out fault studies and relay coordination studies, created relay settings. I have designed communication systems between substation, and system control and data acquisition (Scada). You might spend a few years doing any of these jobs. You often have to direct other people like autocad drafters, relay technicians, linemen, who officially do not report to you. Communication is important. Creating teams where they do not exist is important.
Last week I had phone conferences with engineers in several different cities. I created a few prints in autocad. Marked up more and had my drafter update them. Mentored our new engineering graduate. Vented about corporate management being non supportive.
