How were Jews treated in Germany in 1933-39?

When the nazis came to power did they start convincing people to be bad to Jews? Or did it not start until the final solution?

Thank you!

The National Socialist Party of Adolf Hitler gained 17,300,000 votes in the election and gained 288 seats in the Reichstag. On 30 January 1933 Hitler was legally appointed Chancellor of the German Reich by President Von Hindenberg. On 24 March 1933 the Reichstag elected by 441 votes to 94 to give full emergency powers to the new Reich Chancellor and the corrupt Weimar Republic ceased to exist.

On that same day, 24 March 1933, on the front page of the London Daily Express appeared the main headlines: "Judaea declares war on Germany: Jews of all the world unite", and followed with:

'The Israelite people of the entire world declare economic and financial war on Germany. The appearance of the Swastika as the symbol of the new Germany revives the old war symbol of the Jews. Fourteen million Jews stand as one body to declare war on Germany. The Jewish wholesale dealer leaves his business, the banker his bank, the shopkeeper his shop, the beggar his miserable hut in order to combine forces in the holy war against Hitler's people.'

Vladimir Jabotinsky, founder of the Irgun Zvai Leumi terrorist organisation, wrote in the January 1934 issue of Mascha Rjetach:

'For months now the struggle against Germany is waged by each Jewish community at each conference in all our syndicates and by each Jew all over the world. There is reason to believe that our part in this struggle has general value. We will start a spiritual and material war of all the world against Germany's ambitions to become once again a great nation, to recover lost territories and colonies. But our Jewish interests demand Germany's total destruction, collectively and individually. The German nation is a threat to us Jews.'

Emil Ludwig Cohen wrote in his book The New Holy Alliance, Strasburg, 1938:

'Even if Hitler at the last moment would want to avoid war which would destroy him he will, in spite of his wishes, be compelled to wage war.'

Bernard Lechache wrote in The Right to Live (December 1938):

'It is our task to organise the moral and cultural blockade of Germany and disperse this nation. It is up to us to start a merciless war.'

The Jewish newspaper Central Blad Voor Israeliten in Nederlands printed on 13 September 1939:

'The millions of Jews living in America, England, France, North Africa and South, not forgetting Palestine, have decided to carry on the war in Germany to the very end. It is to be a war of extermination.'

The Toronto Star (26 February 1940) printed a declaration of a Rabbi Perlberg, Director of the British section of the Jewish World Congress:

'The Jewish World Congress is in a state of war with Germany for seven years.'

German ati semitism came from WWI and the Balfour Declaration, which was the reward for the Zionists to have drawn the USA into the war. As a consequence the Reich was forced by a British Genocide to sign the Versailles paper.

Hitler used that wave of anti semitism to gain votes. He was actively supported by Zionism. In 1933 both signed the Haavara agreement by which German Jews could emigrate to Palestine taking with them all their assets. Their possessions were purchased by the Reich and the value (minus a "generous" tax) was transferred to the Haavara Bank in Tel Aviv. This Bank was founded for the deal. By contract only German export goods were to be purchased from the money. This way the Zionists together with the Nazis broke the Jewish world wide boycott against Nazi Germany.

The most pro Zionist organization in Nazi Germany is reported to have been the SS.

anti semitism existed before Hitler was born. It existed in Europe, and in Germany, for hundreds of years. What Hitler did was to tap into that antisemitism to get votes and gain power. Then he (and the SS leadership) combined the antisemitism into a pseudo-scientific racial theory.

On the basis of that racial theory, the Nazis began passing laws that restricted Jews in many ways. It restricted them from teaching "Aryans", from attending German schools, holding government jobs, and eventually stripping Jews of German citizenship. This happened over the years you mention. The result was to socially and economically isolate Jews from other Germans. Some Jews took the warning and left Germany, though it cost them most of what they had. Others could not afford to leave, or could not find a country to accept them.

On top of the legal isolation, Jews were subject to harassment. Their stores were vandalized, Jews were mocked, and sometimes even beaten in the streets. In 1938 the Nazis authorized "Crystal night", a bout of violence against German Jews that saw synagogues burned, more businesses destroyed or vandalized, and numerous Jews assaulted. Many were rounded up and taken to concentration camps. After the violence ended. the nazis added insult to injury by forcing the Jews to pay "damages".

Less than a year later the war started, and Germany held large tracts of Poland. The SS then started setting up the concentration camps that would become the official death camps, designed to eliminate Jews and other "undesirables" from the German Reich.

The Nazi's vilified the Jews in order to gain power. They convinced the public the Jews were responsible for all the problems in Germany, and got elected by promising to get rid of the Jews. So it started from the very beginning.

1933 to 1935 were start of social but not main legal discrimination. 1936 Gun Control act denied Jews and political unreliable rights to firearms- a jew with pistol could now legally be tried for criminal possession for what was legal the year before. . 1937 rioting and denial of insurance for damage, taking of foriegn currencies and gold was another loss of legal rights the Jews had prior to laws enactments. 1939 war acts had many- but not all jews classed as 'enemy Aliens' nearest to US terms. The jewish WW1 vets got a last chance to leave country for whoever would take them--and US sent boatload back to totenlager/deathcamps..

Laws against Jews started immediately upon Hitler's appointment. Read the book In the Garden of Beasts, which traces the antisemitic laws and actions as they occurred in 1934 and 1935. There was antisemitism before that time, but there were not laws against it, and there WERE laws against beating people up, so antisemites risked arrest if they acted on their hatred before that time. After that, they could do it without risk, so they did.

Yes they did try to convince people to be bad to them. They released anti-semetic propaganda that would encourage people to fire jews from their companies and universities not to accept jews, and encourage them not to grant degrees to jews who are already studying. It was a slow calculated process that eventually led up to the final solution.
