Well, the "Advantage" is simple: Blu-Ray discs are capable of holding more data, thusly they are capable of producing a better image on-screen. What does this mean? Well, your average single-layered DVD holds approximately 4.7GB of data. This data can be HD, (1920x1080), but you will have less of it. A blu ray disc holds (single-layered) 25 GB of data. This means that a single blu ray disc is capable of holding a full-length feature film in resolutions at or above 1280x720. You must keep in mind that it is entirely dependent upon the type of television you are watching it on. If this is an inexpensive television I would highly recommend that you do NOT get a blu ray and get a simple DVD player. A blu ray would prove to be of little advantage in this situation. There would be negligible, if any, improvement in picture quality. Pease refer to my links as reference and additional information. I think it is good you are trying to educate yourself rather than blindly purchasing something simply because "they say its better".
