Women do this too. Its not so much a fear of committment, its moreso a fear of being rejected/hurt by getting in too deep, so they choose to swtich off their feelings rather than risk getting hurt. Its quite common.

He doesn't want to be serious....blame it on age, immaturity or emotional unavailibility. Don't take it personally..sometimes timing is just off. Keep ur oprtions open.
