Why is an auxiliary cable called an auxiliary cable and not an audio cable?

I just don't get why it's called an AUX cable if it provides audio service, what exactly is it helping that has to do with the prefix "aux-"?

If that were the case, every wire used could be called an "audio cable" since they all work together to provide you with audio. It's called Auxiliary because it's an additional or secondary supporting source.
