This guy has recently sent me a message on facebook with his number and saying text me? at the end.

Should I text him and if I do, how long should I wait and what should I text him?

and what if he just turns out to be a player? How could I stop talking to him in a nice way?

Just text him geez. That's the whole reason he gave you his number and told you to text him.
