There is no set number of tools u will need......u will at least need all of the basics like wrenches sockets metric and non.......since u didn't specify what kinda shop work all I can say is u will need any tool u think ur going to need......if u find u don't have the right tool for the job u will have to ask someone to borrow a tool and this pisses off other mechanics.......no one likes loaning out tools!

The $10,000.00 Craftsman set will get you started. You will add many special tools to that. Some you can only get from Snap On. I've been buying tools every year for 17 years, they keep making different bolt heads so you will never stop buying. I probably have about $35,000.00 now. Some scanners cost over $2,000.00 each
