The alternative to playing the stock market is investing in the stock market. Open accounts with large cap stock companies with dividend reinvestment programs. DRIP accounts can be purchased with small amounts to start, have very low-cost fees to run, and additional shares may be purchased monthly, with small amounts.
Doing this consistently allows for long term growth of your investments. I currently have my own mutual fund with a DRIP portfolio of Exxon-Mobil, Johnson & Johnson, Proctor & Gamble, Florida Power & Light, Duke Energy, Colgate-Palmolive,Phillip Morris and many others.
More information can be found at dripinvestor.com and at directinvesting.com. There are many other sites to peruse, Google DRIPs.

To play it safe, try a savings account, Money Market accounts or CDs.
Other than playing with individual stocks, try no-load mutual funds.
Bonds at this time are not good.

Treasury bonds, cd's, and some corporate bonds.
Some credit unions offer cd's as far as 7 years out.
