In the Middle Ages (6-16th c. CE), under what types of rulers did Jews live?

In the Middle Ages (6-16th c. CE), under what types of rulers did Jews live? What were the notable religious developments of this period, which can be seen as a result of the interaction between Judaism and these other religions?

    In different countries they lived under the rulers of the time. The first big expulsion and massacre of Jews was in England, in 1290 if my memory serves well. Jews were tolerated because they could lend money, forbidden as a money-making business to Christians of the time, but were always likely to be persecuted when a scapegoat was needed.
