1. simplify -8x^2 over 24 x^4

2. simpify 15y^3 over 2x^2y divide by 8 over 10

3. simpifly49m^3 or 5m divide 14m over 25m

1. Divide out the -8 and 24 first. you should get

-x^2 / 3x^4 Now use the exponent rules for dividing exponents. When you divide the bases you SUBTRACT THE EXPONENTS. SO 2 - (4) = -2 so the exponent is -2

you are now left with 2/3x^-2 OR better yet 2/2x^2

2.simpify 15y^3 over 2x^2y divide by 8 over 10 When you divide by a fraction you flip the fraction and multiply.

so

15y^3 10 150y^3

------- x ---- = -------

2x^2y 8 16y^2 y\

At this point I'm a little confused. Should there be a "y" next to the 2x^2y part of the problem?

-8x^2 / 24x^4

law of exponents; divide the bases, subtract the exponents

(-8/24) times x^(2-4)

-1/3 times x^-2

law of exponents; to the power of a negative, flip fraction and make power positive

(-1/3) times (x/1)^-2

(-1/3) times (1/x)^2

-1/3 times 1/x^2

(-1)(1) / (3)(x^2)

-1/3x^2

can't simplify further

assuming expression is

15y^3 / 2x^2y DIVIDED BY 8/10

is the same as

15y^3 / 2x^2y TIMES 10/8

NOTE that y^1 goes into y^3 with y^2 left over, and into y^1 with nothing left over

15y^2 / 2x^2 TIMES 10 / 8

NOTE that 2 goes into 2 once and into 10 five time through cross-cancelling

15y^2 / 1x^2 TIMES 5 / 8

(15y^2)(5) / (x^2)(8)

75y^2 / 8x^2

49m^3 / 5m DIVIDED BY 14m / 25m

is the same as
