It really depends on what you want, I got a PS3 for the exclusives like MGS4, Uncharted 3, God of War 3 and Little Big Planet 2. The Xbox 360 has decent exclusives too though, like Halo, Fable III and Gear of War
An Xbox 360 is a lot better at multi-player then the PS3, but it does cost you $50 a year, which isn't much. If you don't play multi-player or just play it occasionally, I'd get a PS3.
The 360 is also slightly better on multi platform games like COD.
The PS3 also has Blu-Ray, but since Blu-Ray players have gotten so cheap, it's not really a deciding factor.
Technically speaking they are about even in graphics.
The PS3 has a slightly lower end GPU, but it makes up with its CPU, a Cell Broadband Engine, with 1 PPE and 7 SPE's, although this makes it very difficult to code games for, only games that show its real power is PS3 exclusives, no multi-platform game producer will take any extra time to make it look better on the PS3.
The Xbox 360 only has a basic tri-core CPU, which is good in some ways such as being easier to code for.
Now, for motion gaming. I couldn't care less on this part but you might. Kinect vs Move. Move isn't really anything new, it's basically a copy of the Wii, but Kinect is something new, controllerless gaming. It's quite interesting, but at some times glitchy, it's also fun for people who have no experience in gaming whatsoever, since a controller at times can be quite intimidating, so I'd have to go with Kinect.
Price: (doesn't really matter since you aren't buying it)
The Xbox 360 and PS3 come in 2 different SKu's each.
Xbox has a 4GB version and a 250GB version priced at 199$ and $299, the 250GB version also has a glossy color to it, not that it matters much. And the 250GB holiday bundle at $299 comes with Fable III and Halo Reach. I wouldn't touch the 4GB one though, you will run out of hard drive space fast. Bare in mind the 4GB one does NOT include a controller, at least at Best Buy. (correct me if I'm wrong) So that brings the price up to $250. The slim Xbox 360 is quite pretty.
The PS3 has a 160GB version and a 320GB bundle version, priced at $250 and $299, currently the bundled 320GB system has Uncharted 3 with it (great game). The slim PS3 in my mind is well...ugly, but at least it's not a dust collector.
All in all, PS3 is a better bang for your buck, not having to pay for online and with a built in Blu-Ray player. With AMAZING exclusives, I'd get that if I had to chose.
But if you are a hardcore gamer wanting to play online or want controllerless gaming I'd get an Xbox 360.
Sorry for the long post, hope I helped.
EDIT: I forgot to add this.
With the release of the Xbox 360 slim, the percentage of broken Xbox's have gone down, and it's impossible to get a RRoD now, because they removed the red flashing lights.
But the PS3 still breaks less.
EDIT2: I also forgot this, I feel dumb :(.
The controller you will get now would be a Dualshock 3 and a basic Xbox 360 controller (never changed)
I gotta say, the Xbox 360 controller feels better in the hand then the Dualshock 3 controller, but the battery back in the back makes my middle finger hurt after constant use, I'm not sure if this is just me or not. The Dualshock 3 has SixAxis technology, which is like motion control in it, honestly though, very few games use this, I could probably count the number of games that use this on one hand. Both have rumble support.
The Dualshock 3 is very easy to charge, all you do is plug in a micro USB in the back of the controller and you are done, very effortless. But with the Xbox 360 controller you need to buy a recharge pack, if not you will be replacing batteries constantly.
The Dualshock 3 hasn't change much since the original Dualshock, so I'd say the Xbox 360 controller is better.
