I WOULD STAY AWAY FROM LIFE INSURANCE COMPANIES

These appear to be mostly insurance companies, that offer investments. But not necessarily investments themselves. What investments that are offered within them, I can not guess.
But what funds does tiaa-cref have to offer?? Do you have all their funds available??
And usaa might also be worth a look.

Never invest in sector or index fund just put your money in diversified fund because there is lots of chance to change direction of investment and getting higher return.
